You noticed. That matters.

Being worried about someone can feel heavy. Here's how to help without putting them (or you) at more risk.

Gentle steps

  1. 1
    Ask, don't diagnose.
"How are you, really?" is enough.
  2. 2
    Listen without fixing.
Silence is okay. So is not knowing what to say.
  3. 3
Never share their situation without consent.
Unless a child is at risk or someone's life is in immediate danger.
  4. 4
    Offer options, not orders.
Share a helpline or this gateway — let them choose.
  5. 5
    Look after yourself too.
You can't pour from an empty cup.

When to call for help immediately

  • They are being physically hurt or threatened — call 999.
  • They say they are going to end their life tonight — stay with them and call 999 or NHS 111 (mental health option).
  • A child is at risk — call your local authority's children's social care, or 999.
